Toronto Sea Scouts.

This is an initial feeler for a proposal for the summer of 2027. One week at Haliburton Scout Reserve (HSR), in Ontario. One week in B.C. or Alberta

If this interests you, email darrell@kapn.net. There is no commitment at this point.

Please guesstimate how many youth and leaders might be involved.

Changes to the details below can be arranged with those interested.

Please forward to anyone you think might be interested, sea scouts or scouts, sea venturers, venturers.

I need to find interested Ontario and non-Ontario troops to pair up.

BACKGROUND:

Keith and I have both camped at HSR several times.

I have been involved in four previous Experiences Canada Exchanges, most recently (2017) Hog’s Back Sea Scouts (formerly 115th. Ottawa) exchanged with St. John’s, Newfoundland. Fantastic trip. Twenty scouts from each troop.

2027 SUMMER IDEA:

Haliburton Scout Reserve in Ontario celebrates its 80th year in 2027. This is a fabulous scout camp. They want to make it a special event. It is 5,000 acres with many campsites around a large lake. Canoes at every site for transportation to whatever activities you select. Sailboats and kayaks are also available.

We would organize some Sea Scout activities together at camp as well to make it a real rendezvous.

We want as many troops as possible to experience this event. Together. We already have an HSR committee working on this.

Scouts Canada is currently partnered with Experiences Canada.

Experiences Canada arranges inter-provincial exchanges for youth. Youth must be 12 or turn 12 in the year of the exchange. Cannot be over 17.)

Typically exchanges involve home billeting, but E.C. is fine with group camping. This also reduces family police checks need for home billets.

By group camping it makes it easier for troops to work with other local troops to balance the numbers of youth involved.

Check websites for Haliburton Scout Reserve and Experiences Canada for more info.

ORGANIZING TIMELINE:

Finding Ontario troops interested — no later than September 2026.

At this point we agree on what week or weeks you will camp at HSR. Not all troops need pick the same week, but we’d like to involve only two different weeks if possible.

Finding non-Ontario troops interested — no later than October 2026.

EARLIER IS WAY BETTER!

All troops paired — no later than mid-November 2026.

POTENTIAL COSTS:

Travel:

Experiences Canada fee is $250 per group plus $250 per youth (2025 price) That includes all transportation costs both ways including insurances. It does NOT include cancellation/interruption insurance which the group is responsible for.

This DOES include pick up and delivery for the out-of-province group from Toronto airport to and from HSR. That’s a big deal!

(Pretend $300 per youth for ALL inter-provincial transportation.)

On the ground:

Each group is responsible for all costs for its own group and the costs of hosting the visiting group when at HSR. Typically I estimate a week camp fee, food, etc. at $600 per participant.

ESTIMATED TOTAL:

$1,500-$1,700 per youth for 7 camping days at HSR AND 7 camping days in the other province. (The ‘where’ in the other province will be a discussion between you are your paired troop.

That travel week will be worked out between you.) Plus, probably 4 travel days, so . . . 600 + 1,600 = $1,800 for 18 days

(All estimates at this point.)

DIVISION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Darrell will be responsible for coordinating and pairing.

I am already connected to the Experiences Canada/Scouts Canada liaison.

Once you have been connected to your partner group, it will be your responsibility to work out details, such as what other week you will travel. Ideally AT LEAST one week between camps!

Consult me at any time.

I will NOT be handling any of your group payments to Experiences Canada.

NEXT STEPS:

After I have a few interested troops, we’ll arrange a zoom meeting.

Need more information? Email me.

Yours in Sea Scouting,

Darrell and Keith

An idea for a National Sea Scout Rendezvous and exchange Ahoy Sea Scouts, Sea Venturers and Sea Scouters!
